Pt. Suraj Nirwan is a musical child prodigy. He is an Indian Classical Tabla Player of Delhi Gharana, also a versatile singer, songwriter, and composer known for his meaningful lyrics. He was initiated into the process of Music learning at a very early age. He gave his first performance at 4 years old in one of the most prestigious stages for Indian Classical Musicians: Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh (Varanasi). Throughout his childhood, Suraj was groomed by the music teachings of his grandfather, the late Pt. Motilal Nirwan. As an adolescent and young adult, Suraj’s tabla studies were nourished by his father, following the strict discipline of ‘Guru Shishya Parampara’ within Indian Classical Music. Suraj has also received vocal training from various teachers and gurus. He has participated in many music events, collaborated with many famous artists worldwide, and has performed within India and abroad, such as Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Bangladesh and Nepal. Suraj is a profound Soloist and Accompanist who has developed his own style of Tabla playing that emphasizes clarity of syllables (Bols) and resonance of sound. His approach to both teaching and performing with tabla exemplifies balanced phrases combined with both traditional grammar and modern exploration. Suraj ascribes the foundation of his style to the Delhi Gharana, which is recognized as the oldest tradition of Tabla and the origin of all modern Tabla playing. He is a firm believer of keeping the tradition alive which is visible in his systematic playing. As a performer, Suraj is precise, gracious, and responsive in the ways that he can communicate through his Tabla. As a practitioner of yoga and meditation, Suraj firmly believes that through the selective patterns and tones on the tabla, a listener can achieve meditative state and tranquility. This inspired him to develop “Naad Dhyanam”, Music that touches your soul.
